Repeated errors starting or updating the Canopy GUI application

Usually, if you experience an error starting or updating Canopy, it will be sufficient to try again, or at most to restart your computer (which will free locked files and processes) and then try again. If you still have problems...

Do you have the most recent version of Canopy installed? (See the Canopy release notes online.) 

If NO:


  • Do not do a full uninstallation or re-download of Canopy. This is very rarely necessary.
  • It will almost always be sufficient to delete the System and configuration / preference directories (and perhaps User too) as described in this article,
  • Restart your computer,
  • Restart Canopy.
